Waterford Fire Service has been responding to a gorse fire in the Mahon Falls area of the Comeragh Mountains since it was first reported yesterday at approximately 3pm. Crews from Dungarvan, Kilmacthomas, and Portlaw attended the scene.
A spokesperson for Waterford City and County Council confirmed that, although a large area has been burned, firefighters successfully prevented the fire from spreading into nearby forestry. They added that no buildings are currently at risk and no injuries have been reported.
Due to narrow access roads in the area, the public is being asked to stay away to avoid hindering ongoing emergency operations.
The cause of the fire remains unknown. A Status Orange Fire Danger Notice is still in effect, and the public is urged to exercise extreme caution in outdoor recreational areas. Campfires, fire pits, and barbecues should not be used, and care should be taken when disposing of cigarettes or other combustible materials. Anyone who notices a fire is advised to report it immediately by calling 999 or 112.
In a separate incident, crews from Waterford City and Kilkenny Fire Services spent more than 17 hours tackling a significant wildland fire on Tory Hill in south Kilkenny over the weekend. Smoke and flames were visible from Waterford City on Friday night and into Saturday morning. Firefighters, assisted by local farmers, gained access to the hill via a nearby field and were able to safely contain the blaze.
Meanwhile, Tipperary County Council reported that the situation regarding recent wildfire incidents on Slievenamon remains stable. Emergency services and response teams continue to operate on the mountain, with no risk currently posed to life or property.
Crews are focusing on monitoring and addressing isolated hotspots as part of the ongoing response. Smoke flare-ups are occurring in some areas due to shifting wind conditions and continued dampening efforts. Authorities confirmed that all reported incidents are being assessed and managed as required.
Emergency services will maintain a presence in the area, closely monitor conditions, and respond to any further developments.
