Carey, with an address at Dunsink Drive in Finglas, was convicted by a unanimous jury verdict earlier this year after representing himself during his trial. The conviction stems from a January 2023 Instagram livestream in which he said refugees were in Ireland to rape women and children. In the broadcast, he urged people to gather outside Finglas Garda Station.
The livestream followed a local woman's claim of sexual assault, which sparked days of anti-immigrant protests.
Sentencing Adjournment
Following a sentence hearing to hear pleas in mitigation, Carey informed Judge Patricia Ryan at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court that he now wishes to instruct a solicitor.
The application faced a unique logistical hurdle:
• The Solicitor Dispute: Judge Ryan noted that an ongoing solicitors' dispute has left only two names on the court's list of available solicitors.
• Court Constraints: The judge explained she could not provide a standard list for him to choose from, though she noted the dispute might be resolved soon.
Carey provided the court with the name of a Limerick-based solicitor and requested time to consult with him in person. Judge Ryan subsequently adjourned the case until next Friday for mention, at which point a new sentencing date will be scheduled.
