Retired Franciscan brother Seamus O'Callaghan has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for the anal rape of a teenage boy nearly 30 years ago. The 82-year-old was convicted in May following a trial at the Central Criminal Court.
Case Details:
• The Offence: The victim was approximately 13 years old when the assault occurred in a bathroom at an Offaly secondary school between August 1998 and December 1999.
• Prior Convictions: O’Callaghan previously served a five-year sentence imposed in 2006 for 11 indecent assaults against three teenage boys at a different Offaly school between 1978 and 1990.
• The Investigation: The victim came forward to Gardaí in 2021. Records obtained from the Franciscan order subsequently verified O'Callaghan's teaching history.
Victim Impact and Sentencing
In a statement read to the court, the victim detailed how the abuse derailed his life, causing severe depression, substance abuse, and multiple suicide attempts.
Mr Justice Kerida Naidoo established a headline sentence of 13 years. He cited aggravating factors including a breach of trust, age disparity, and O'Callaghan's criminal history. The term was reduced to 11 years to account for the defendant's advanced age and health issues. Prior to his sentencing, O’Callaghan had been living with other retired members of his religious order in Corrandulla, County Galway.
