A 36-year-old man charged in connection with the alleged stabbing of a woman at Holy Cross Church in Tramore, Co Waterford, has been remanded in custody after declining a psychiatric evaluation.
Court appearance and psychiatric report
Niall Cummins, of the Willows, Clarinwood, Tramore, appeared via video link at Waterford District Court on Tuesday, where the court heard he had refused an appointment with a psychiatrist. As a result, no psychiatric report has been prepared at this stage. The State objected to bail, and Judge Kevin Staunton ordered that Cummins be held in custody until August 11, pending directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Members of his family were present at the courthouse for the brief hearing.
Background to the alleged incident
The alleged stabbing took place last Tuesday morning shortly before the 10am Mass, while the woman was saying the rosary inside Holy Cross Church in Summerhill, Tramore. Following the attack, gardaí arrested and charged Cummins. He first appeared in Waterford District Court the following Wednesday, when the court initially ordered a psychiatric assessment.
