The US State Department has confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the family of Jamey Carney and a spokesperson for the Trump administration said that "no higher priority" exists than the safety of American citizens abroad, offering condolences to Carney's loved ones while declining further comment out of respect for their privacy.
The Victim
Ms Carney, 43, was found dead in an upstairs room at her rented home on the Muckross Road in Killarney last Tuesday. A mother to a 13-year-old daughter, she had been living in the Kerry town.
The Suspect
A 28-year-old Jordanian man — identified by gardaí as a person of "significant interest" — was arrested in Jordan on Monday. Gardaí had not sought his detention, and senior officers remain unclear as to why Jordanian authorities moved to hold him. Garda Headquarters has been informed of the arrest.
International Pressure
The case has drawn in multiple agencies across two continents:
FBI: Has stated through its London Legal Attaché that it "stands ready to assist in any way that the Irish government may request"
US State Department: Providing direct family support
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio: Met Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi in Washington today for talks on regional security. When pressed by RTÉ News for comment on how the suspect travelled to Jordan, Rubio offered no response
Gardaí continue to investigate the circumstances of Ms Carney's death. Anyone with information is urged to contact Killarney Garda Station or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
