Former FAI coach Eamonn Collins, who was arrested as part of an investigation into allegations of historical sexual abuse connected to the Ladies Football Association of Ireland dating back three decades, has been released from detention.
He was taken into custody in Dublin yesterday morning by officers from the Garda National Protective Services Bureau. The investigation began following a joint inquiry by RTÉ and the Sunday Independent. Several women came forward in the RTÉ Investigates programme Girls in Green, broadcast two years ago, alleging inappropriate behaviour. These claims were also reported in the Sunday Independent.
Gardaí confirmed that the man was released from detention late yesterday and that a file will now be prepared for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
In a statement, the Football Association of Ireland said it will continue to cooperate with An Garda Síochána as the investigation progresses.
