A 46-year-old doctor has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the rape, coercive control, and assault of his wife over a three-year period.
Although he initially pleaded guilty to charges of assault causing harm, he denied two counts of rape and one count of coercive control. He was later convicted of these offences following a trial at Sligo Central Criminal Court, where the sentencing hearing also took place.
The court heard that the couple met in Sudan and married in 2010, later having three children. They moved to Ireland in 2017. While the man worked in various regional hospitals, his wife was unable to work as a doctor in Ireland and remained at home to care for their children. The family relocated frequently due to his employment.
The woman told the jury that her husband subjected her to verbal abuse, periods of isolation, and strict financial control. She said he often insulted her, telling her she was “good for nothing except cooking and cleaning,” and prevented her from leaving the house alone. As a result, she developed anxiety and suffered panic attacks.
The rape convictions relate to two incidents between 2018 and 2019. In one instance, during Ramadan, she was fasting and refused his request for sex, but he forced himself on her. In another incident, he told her he needed to “practice sex.” Despite her refusal, he raped her.
The court also heard details of multiple assaults. On one occasion, he attacked her in front of their children, using a laptop to strike her. In another incident, he punched her in the forehead after she asked him to take out the rubbish. He also bit her hand during an argument over money.
During a final incident, the woman attempted to go to a local garda station, but her husband followed her. Although gardaí observed an interaction between them, she concealed her injuries and said she was willing to return home. The case was later referred to Tusla, and she subsequently made a formal complaint. The man was arrested and initially denied all allegations.
In a victim impact statement, the woman said she had made significant sacrifices for the marriage and had tried to maintain the family unit. She described how the abuse and sexual violence severely affected her confidence, self-esteem, and mental health, noting that the offences occurred in a place where she should have felt safe.
Judge Sean Gillane stated that the offences represented a serious breach of trust and took place within a context of sustained coercive control and violence. He also noted that some of the abuse occurred in front of the couple’s children. The man has been suspended from his medical work since July 2024.
The judge set a headline sentence of 12 years but reduced it to 10 years in prison, taking into account the man’s work history and lack of prior convictions.
