Man in His 80s Dies After Getting into Difficulty in Stormy Water Off Dublin Coast
Dublin, Ireland — January 25, 2026

A man in his 80s has died after getting into difficulty in rough sea waters off the south Dublin coast, Gardaí and emergency services have confirmed.

Emergency responders were called to the Great South Wall in Poolbeg at approximately 2:15pm on Saturday, January 24, 2026, following reports that a person had entered the water and was in distress. Gardaí and the Dún Laoghaire Coast Guard attended the scene, with the latter posting on social media that a person had been located in the water amid stormy sea conditions and subsequently recovered.

The man, aged in his 80s, was retrieved from the water close to the Great South Wall but was pronounced dead at the scene. Garda sources have stated that the Coroner has been notified, and a post-mortem examination is being arranged to establish the circumstances of the death and determine any further investigative steps.

The Dún Laoghaire Coast Guard shared footage of the stormy conditions at the Great South Wall and issued a stark reminder to the public to heed safety warnings and stay clear of the coastline during adverse weather, emphasising that dangerous conditions can arise quickly and pose significant risks even to experienced walkers or swimmers.

This tragic incident comes amid unsettled weather in Ireland, with strong winds and rough seas reported along the east coast. Authorities are urging members of the public to exercise caution around coastal areas, particularly where storm surges or high waves are present, and to contact emergency services immediately if they witness anyone in distress.
