Former Irish Defence Forces soldier Cathal Crotty has been released from Castlerea Prison after serving a year and a half of a two-year sentence. Crotty was granted early release due to standard remission and good behavior.
The sentence stems from a 2022 incident in Limerick, where Crotty randomly attacked Natasha O'Brien, beating her unconscious after she asked him to stop shouting homophobic slurs. Following the assault, he bragged about the violence on social media.
Crotty was discharged from the military upon his conviction. He was originally given a fully suspended sentence in 2024, but the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) successfully appealed the ruling as unduly lenient, leading to his imprisonment last January.
Speaking about his release, Ms. O'Brien stated that authorities had not informed her, expressing frustration at being left in the dark as a victim. The Irish Prison Service declined to comment, stating it does not discuss individual cases.
