Boiling Point – Cork City’s Crime Problems.

My thoughts on the current crime situation in Cork City.

Two weeks into July and it seems the crime problems are only getting worse. While people around the country are mainly focused on The World Cup and enjoying the great weather we are getting over the last few weeks, Cork City residents are dealing with a crime wave that is overshadowing the current heat wave.

Some of the incidents that have happened in July so far:

• Fistfights and other minor crimes have been happening constantly around the city, Bishop Lucey Park (known by locals as the ‘Peace Park’) is one of the hotspots for these incidents.

• A Garda on high visibility patrol on Patrick Street was assaulted during the evening of the 6th of July after stopping and speaking to man in his 30s.

• Multiple attacks took place in Blackpool recently. A 15 year old boy was stabbed, resulting in serious injuries, on Sunday the 12th of July. A man in his 30s was beaten with a weapon in a separate incident the next day, the man was allegedly beaten with an illegal baton available for purchase online.

• A woman in her late 20s was stabbed in Farranree on Monday morning the 13th of July after multiple warnings that her life may be in danger were given to Gardaí the night before the stabbing. LTT Media members were some of the people providing the information and the Director of LTT Media has contacted both the GSOC and Minister for Justice in relation to failure by Gardaí to act prior to the stabbing. A man in his late 20s was later arrested in relation to the incident.

These are just some of the incidents that have happened around the Cork City in July. Members of LTT Media have also heard from Bartenders, City Council Workers and other people working in the city that intimidation and ‘close calls’ with dangerous individuals have happened to them throughout the month. It is not a safe working environment for these people and it is no surprise considering what people just passing through the city may see.

I fear this is all building up to a major incident. Something which makes the incidents we have seen now look pale in comparison to what we may see soon. You can feel it in the air, you can see it with your own eyes. The city is turning into a Warzone. It seems to be lawless at times. The Gardaí don’t have the resources to deal with this and it seems like some members of the force don’t want to deal with it. The Politicians don’t care and seem to be more concerned with virtue signalling over trending topics among the wealthy and privileged or petty arguments among themselves.

Lawlessness will lead us to ruin. The longer this continues, the closer we get to the boiling point. It starts off with minor incidents like fistfights and drunken behaviour but it can lead to horrific crimes we would never expect to see in our lives within a ‘Western Nation’. It will also drag more and more people into crime as the criminal organisations already here thrive in the chaos and the drugs keep flowing through our streets.

Something needs to change. We cannot live like this. We should not have to see our city burn in anger and mayhem before that change comes.
