A woman has died and a young girl is in critical condition following a road crash in County Cavan

A woman in her 50s has died and a young girl is in critical condition following a road crash in County Cavan.

The collision, involving a car and a truck, occurred on the R162 at Corclare, Shercock, shortly after 5pm on Friday.

The girl, who was travelling as a passenger in the car, was taken to Temple Street Children's Hospital, where she remains in a critical condition. The driver of the car, a woman in her 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Several other individuals involved in the incident were treated at the scene by ambulance personnel.

The road was closed overnight to allow for a forensic examination by collision investigators, and local diversions were put in place.

Gardaí have issued an appeal for witnesses and are asking anyone with camera footage of the incident to come forward.
