COBH, CO CORK - A stolen vehicle was driven through a stone wall during a Garda pursuit in Cobh in the early hours of Tuesday morning, causing serious damage and sparking calls for more Gardaí in the town.
The crash occurred on Tuesday, 21 July 2026, on the edge of the Cluain Ard housing estate. The vehicle swerved before losing control and crashing straight through a wall.

The Pursuit
Gardaí were responding to reports of a stolen vehicle and suspected the occupants of joyriding. Shortly after the crash, both the driver and Gardaí exited their vehicles before the driver fled on foot with Gardaí in pursuit.
Garda Statement
"Gardaí responded to reports of a stolen vehicle in Cobh, Co. Cork on 21st July 2026. During the course of this incident, the stolen vehicle collided with a wall, causing significant damage to a street light and a parked car. Investigations are ongoing."
Local Reaction
Cllr Dominic Finn, who lives in Cluain Ard, described the footage as "absolutely horrendous":
"If that was during the day, someone could have been killed instantly with the severity of the impact. I think it's horrendous that it's happening in our neighbourhood in this day and age."
Finn had previously brought a motion before the Cobh Municipal District calling for increased Garda presence. Last month, he met with the Minister for Justice to press the issue.
"Joyriding is not just an issue in Cobh; it's practically nationwide. We need more Gardaí right across every town so people can feel safe in their own communities."
Context
Joyriding has become increasingly common across Cork, with thieves often targeting cars without immobilisers. Vehicles are typically abandoned or burnt out once thieves have finished, leaving owners and Gardaí to locate them weeks later.
