Man, 27, Dies After Incident at Cork Pub — Gardaí Launch Investigation
A 27-year-old man has died following an incident at a pub in Riverstick, Co Cork, on Saturday evening.
The man, understood to be originally from Romania and living in the area in recent months, became unresponsive after being restrained by a number of men at Allens pub shortly after 9pm.
What Happened
Gardaí say the man was initially asked to leave the pub after becoming disruptive. He complied but returned a short time later and was again asked to calm down. He became increasingly agitated, at which point several men attempted to restrain him amid concerns for his safety and the safety of others.
During the restraint, the man became unresponsive. Paramedics attended the scene but he was pronounced dead.
Investigation Underway
The Office of the State Pathologist has been informed
An autopsy at Cork University Hospital will determine the course of the Garda investigation
The scene remains technically examined by gardaí
A senior investigating officer has been appointed
An incident room has been established at Bandon Garda station
The pub's car parks to the north and south were cordoned off on Sunday, with a number of vehicles still inside. A marquee on the premises was also surrounded by garda tape.
Local Reaction
Councillor Alan Coleman, a 35-year veteran representative for the area on Cork County Council, said the village had never seen an incident like this before.
"Villagers are in absolute shock."
Appeal for Witnesses
Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information — including road users with dash-cam or camera footage who were in Riverstick between 8pm and 9:30pm on Saturday — to come forward.
