Police in Derry are investigating a violent attack on a bus in which a gang of masked youths smashed multiple windows and assaulted the vehicle as the driver attempted to escape.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday at the Drumahoe Park and Ride facility. Officers received a report at approximately 1:50am.
According to a police spokesperson, as the bus approached Drumahoe, it was met by a group of approximately 10 to 15 youths wearing face coverings.
Believing the group intended to board the bus and continue an altercation, the driver made the decision to drive off. The youths responded by throwing items at the vehicle, punching and kicking the bus as it pulled away.
A number of windows on the bus were damaged during the attack. The extent of the damage and whether any passengers or the driver sustained injuries have not yet been confirmed.
Police have appealed for anyone who was in the Drumahoe area in the early hours of Sunday morning and who may have witnessed the incident, or who has dashcam or CCTV footage, to come forward.
The attack raises fresh concerns about youth violence and anti-social behaviour in the Derry area, particularly around public transport infrastructure. The PSNI has not yet confirmed whether any arrests have been made.
