MAYFIELD, CORK — The search for a young man missing from Cork's northside has ended in tragedy, with gardaí confirming the discovery of a body earlier today.
Gerard 'Jay' Walsh, 27, had been missing from his home in Mayfield since Monday, 20 July 2026. Gardaí issued an official missing persons appeal yesterday, sparking a massive community response.
This morning, search parties converged on the Hollyhill area after appeals from family and friends. Cork City Missing Persons Search and Rescue assisted in the operation.
Gardaí Statement
"Following the discovery of a body of a male, the missing person appeal in respect of Gerald Walsh (27) who was reported missing from Mayfield, Cork, since Monday 20th July, has been stood down. An Garda Síochána would like to thank the public and the media for their assistance."
Family Tribute
Jay's brother, Sean Walsh, paid tribute to those who helped in the search:
"I just want to thank everyone that shared and showed their support over the last few days in trying to find my brother Jay. A huge thank you also to everyone that showed up this morning in the efforts to search. And a huge thanks also to Cork City Missing Persons in the help to find my brother. It wasn't the outcome that we wanted, but he is found — look over us, brother, love you..."
