A 25-year-old woman has been charged following the interception of an explosive device found in a car in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, on Wednesday.
Isobella Perrie Sullivan, a law student from Abbeylands Park in Clane, Co Kildare, appeared before a special sitting of Trim District Court this evening, where she was charged with possession of explosives.
A member of the Garda Special Detective Unit gave evidence regarding her arrest, charge, and caution at Dundalk Garda Station earlier today. The court heard that Ms Perrie Sullivan was stopped in Carrickmacross on Wednesday, and a search of her vehicle uncovered a device in a bag in the back seat. The device was said to contain a timing power unit, a detonator, and suspected Semtex.
The Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team examined the device and determined it was viable.
The detective stated that the offence carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison and opposed bail due to the seriousness of the charge.
Defence solicitor Gavin Booth of Phoenix Law told the court that Ms Perrie Sullivan lives with her father in Co Kildare and is currently studying to become a barrister.
Judge Raymond Finnegan granted bail under strict conditions, including the provision of a €15,000 independent surety, surrender of her passport, daily sign-on at Naas Garda Station, and a curfew between 9pm and 7am. She must also provide her phone number to gardaí.
Ms Perrie Sullivan was remanded in custody with consent to bail, and her case is due to come before Monaghan District Court on Monday.
