Denmark Ends 400-Year-Old Postal Letter Delivery as Digital Communication Takes Over

Denmark has officially brought an end to more than 400 years of traditional letter delivery, becoming the first country in the world to discontinue universal postal mail services. State owned operator PostNord delivered its final letters on 30 December 2025, citing a collapse of over 90% in letter volumes since 2000 as digital communication replaced handwritten correspondence. While parcel delivery will continue, the move marks a historic turning point in how one of Europe’s most digitally advanced societies communicates and may signal what lies ahead for postal systems globally.
