Methamphetamine Worth Nearly €200,000 Seized at Slovak-Ukrainian Border
Authorities have intercepted a significant shipment of methamphetamine at the Slovak-Ukrainian border, preventing drugs with an estimated street value of almost €200,000 from being smuggled into Ukraine.
According to Slovak media reports, two Ukrainian nationals were detained during a border control operation after customs officers discovered approximately two kilograms of methamphetamine concealed in their vehicle. The drugs were allegedly destined for distribution inside Ukraine.
Following the initial arrest, investigators carried out a subsequent search of the suspects’ residence, where they uncovered an additional 1.7 kilograms of methamphetamine. The total quantity seized amounted to around 3.7 kilograms, with authorities estimating its market value at approximately €191,000.
Law enforcement sources described the seizure as a significant disruption to a suspected cross-border drug trafficking route, highlighting growing concerns over synthetic drug smuggling between EU states and Ukraine. Methamphetamine, commonly associated with organised criminal networks, has seen increased trafficking activity across Central and Eastern Europe in recent years.
The suspects are now facing serious drug-trafficking charges, with investigations continuing to determine whether they were acting independently or as part of a wider organised network. Authorities have not ruled out further arrests.
The case underscores the ongoing challenges faced by border security agencies as they work to counter international narcotics smuggling, particularly along routes exploited during periods of regional instability.
Law enforcement officials stressed that cooperation between customs, border police and international partners remains critical in intercepting large-scale drug shipments before they reach the streets.
